I’m visiting family this weekend. I’m taking a break!
When I started this column a month ago, I committed to writing each Friday. So yesterday I was torn - take time out from my toddler granddaughter and 4-month-old grand baby, or keep my commitment to myself and write this post to you.
Clearly, I opted to take a short break.
I can’t say it was easy. I’m a type A personality-a first born- driven to complete the projects I start. But as a person recovering from hypertension, I’ve learned how important it is to take a breather. Headaches, tense shoulders, worry and anxiety lead to other health problems. Last year I had several long-lasting episodes of Vertigo. It forced me to slow down and take a look at how I (don’t) take care of myself.
Now I plan the time for yoga and exercise. I schedule breaks into my day. I take time for things I enjoy-taking walks, drawing, travel and holding the grand babies. I’ve discovered the value of taking time out for me and my family.
Stepping away from my computer also helps my creativity. My best ideas come when I’m moving my body, getting fresh air. When I’m away from screens, emails, texts and social media. I’d love to hear the ways you get your inspiration. Please share in the comments.
So as my family wanders upstairs to fill their coffee cups, I’m signing off. I encourage you to do the same. After all, it’s Saturday.
Nice to meet you Tracey. I'm new to the forum. Just 70 and coming off some long and tricky health problems, I'm opening again.
One thing that I have found that has gotten me through, centering and literally straightening me, has been the 5 Tibetan Rites. The rites are a set of Yoga repetitive exercises that are gentle, yet energizing. I had to modify the leg lifts to one each side but still... I use the YouTube Dalai Lama version for its additional meditative qualities.
So, kudos to you. Take time to enjoy.
To quote Buddhist Monk Thich Nhat Hanh: There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the Way.
Have a great day.
I take long, daily walks to refresh and get inspired.
