What Are You Reading This Summer?
Let me make a few suggestions. ☺️
Summertime, I think you’ll agree, is great for reading. As hot days stretch on into humid evenings, I often find myself curled up on the couch, on the swivel chair on the deck, or on our swinging bed with a good book. Mysteries and Thrillers are my favorite, in case you were wondering. Police Procedure and K9 mysteries can be exciting and educational. Cozy mysteries filled with delicious recipes are fun to taste-test in your kitchen. And Thrillers filled with tension and fast paced action always resolve with a satisfying ending.
And I can recommend a variety of different tones and styles for your personal reading style.
Are you looking for seasonal fun with an edge? Cozy mysteries can have just the right balance between a gregarious character, a vacation type setting, and a murder mystery. For books with sweet delicious recipes, my favorites include Christine DeSmet’s Fudge Shop Mysteries placed in Door County, Wisconsin. Joy Ann Ribar’s Deep Lakes Mysteries placed in northern Wisconsin have suggestions for local wine pairing and delicious bakery recipes. And G.P. Gottlieb’s Whipped and Sipped series are filled with natural, gluten free alternative dishes. T.K. Sheffield’s Backyard Model series, also placed in northern Wisconsin, are just plain funny in a Charlie Barrens kind of vain. And if you’re looking for armchair travel, Sharon Lynn’s Bath Series placed in England are adventurous and fun.
I’m always up for a good police procedural and if you love books with great characters like Karen Slaughter’s Will Trent series with rapid fire action, check out Margaret Mizushima’s Timber Creek K9 mystery series staring Robo and Mattie Cobb. For more K9 books with a romantic twist, I’m in love with Kathleen Donnelly’s National Forest Mysteries. If you love gritty police procedure books placed up north, Jeff Nania’s award winning Northern Lakes Mysteries are tops. Anyone would love a mystery set in the beautiful Brandywine Valley. Saralyn Richard’s award winning Detective Parrott mysteries take the prize.
And now for my favorites, Thriller! Looking for a seat of the pants ride? Carl Vonderau’s standalones will grip you till the end. For rapid fire action and ancient artifacts look to Avanti Centrae’s Van Ops Thrillers. Colleen Winter’s Gatherer series are adrenaline packed speculative thrillers placed in the near future. And paranormal thrillers, the Beyond the Veil series by Sheila Lowe are right up my alley. And Laurie Buchanan’s Sean McPherson thrillers will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotion and action.
All the authors I’ve mentioned are members of Blackbird Writers. We are a group of mystery writers who support each other’s work. But beyond that, these are some of the best and brightest authors in the industry. I haven’t mentioned the young readers books by Sherrill Joseph—which I highly recommend for your littles—or the magical YA books by Valerie Biel. In fact I haven’t mentioned all the blackbirds in this post because I want you to go to our website and check it out. You’ll find support for your writing endeavors and books to inspire.
